Hey there, Friend! I'm Ashleigh

Have you found yourself endlessly doom-scrolling through your social media feeds? Do you turn to social media for comfort or an escape during stressful times? Many of us turn to social media as a way to buffer or escape from the world and our daily struggles. Breaking free from social media is essential because our current use of it is actually a modern-day idol.

Now, you may be picturing golden calves or ancient deities. However, in today’s modern world, idols can take the form of intangible desires and digital distractions that we place above God.

Social media becomes an idol when it receives unquestioning devotion and takes precedence over other important aspects of our lives. It becomes an idol when we spend an excessive amount of time scrolling and checking notifications at the expense of living our actual lives or moving our businesses forward. Breaking free from social media is vital for our well-being.

Avoidance

It’s easy to lose track of time while you scroll, especially with the introduction of reels. They’re fun to watch, and before you know it, you’ve been doing it for an hour. If you’re like me, sometimes you might tell yourself that it’s productive scrolling and you’re finding ideas for your business. But in reality, you’re using it as an escape to avoid what’s going on in your life.

When we stop living our real lives and mindlessly escape into the never-ending social media scroll, our minds sit in a numb state where nothing gets achieved or accomplished. Breaking free from social media idolatry means recognizing and addressing this avoidance behavior.

Use the Algorithm

Social media platforms design their algorithms to keep you on the screen as much as possible. They read your activity and show more of what they think you want to see based on the content you interact with.

The good news is that you can curate your feed to uplift you and bring positive feelings about yourself and your business. You just have to be intentional about the content you’re interacting with. Focus only on what makes you feel good or encourages you to be productive. You can even find ways to trigger yourself to get back to real life. Breaking free from social media involves taking control of what you see.

Journaling

Breaking free from social media idolatry starts with understanding your current relationship with it and what your unconscious goals are when you’re using it. Try journaling through this and think about how social media is currently impacting your life, what emotions you experience, and your reasons for using it. Then dive into what a healthy relationship with social media looks like for you and whether it aligns with your current activity.

Working through this can help you gain insight into how you can shift your behaviors for a healthier relationship with social media. Journaling is a powerful tool for breaking free from social media.

Ending the doom scrolling can be challenging at first. However, by being intentional with the content you interact with and reflecting on your behaviors and emotions, you will develop a healthier relationship with social media. Breaking free from social media is crucial for living a more fulfilling and balanced life.
