As entrepreneurs, most of us pride ourselves on being self-sufficient. We became entrepreneurs because we have an “I can handle it all” mindset, thinking we can do it all on our own. However, overcoming self-sufficiency for entrepreneurial success is crucial. Complete self-sufficiency is just an illusion.
We are hardwired for connection and teamwork and thrive working together, sharing knowledge, and growing together. Being entirely self-sufficient doesn’t fit our nature, and the desire to be entirely self-sufficient could be hurting our businesses. Here are a few key behaviors and actions that female entrepreneurs might engage in when seeking self-sufficiency and how overcoming self-sufficiency can benefit them.
Refusal to Seek Help
When you’re taking on too much because you think you’ve got it all figured out (when you really don’t), you’re missing out on the good stuff. Not to mention, overloading yourself is pretty overwhelming. You don’t actually have to do it all. Overcoming self-sufficiency means you can:
- Embrace a growth mindset and look at every challenge as a chance to grow.
- Build your support network and connect with mentors, peers, and experts who can offer guidance and support.
- Set aside your ego and understand that absolutely nobody has all the answers.
Seeking help when you need it is a game-changer.
Limited Learning
Maybe your drive to be completely self-sufficient presents itself in the form of being that go-getter who believes you can figure everything out on your own. But when you avoid learning from others, you’re putting your skills and knowledge on pause. Learning from others can actually catapult your growth.
Allow yourself to grow and seek out others. You can start by making skill enhancement a priority and investing in your education, whether through workshops, seminars, or courses. Seek out diverse perspectives and embrace the opportunity to learn from others with different experiences than your own. And finally, don’t fall into the trap of reinventing the wheel because sometimes the solutions you’re searching for already exist. Overcoming self-sufficiency in this way will lead to faster growth.
Fear of Vulnerability
Avoiding vulnerability is another pitfall entrepreneurs face when chasing the desire to be self-sufficient. You may want to put on a facade that you’ve got it all figured out, but this can actually make you an inefficient leader and result in your team not being able to relate to you.
Normalize being vulnerable with your team and show them that it’s a strength, not a weakness, by leading by example. Being vulnerable leads to stronger connections, trust, and collaboration which will help your business grow. Overcoming self-sufficiency involves embracing vulnerability as a strength.
Overworking
You’ve got a lot on your plate, pushing yourself to the limit and working crazy hours so you can handle every aspect of your business. But sooner or later, you’re going to get tired and burned out.
Instead, set some boundaries around your working hours (and stick to them), delegate tasks when possible, and make sure you rest. Take a breather—regular breaks and vacations are the secret sauce for success. Overcoming self-sufficiency means recognizing that you don’t have to do everything yourself and that rest is crucial.
Hesitation to Invest
It can be tempting to avoid spending on experts, services, or courses that could level up your business by opting to do everything yourself. But is that money saved really worth more than the precious time and effort you’ll have to spend on tasks that a specialist could handle like a pro?
Calculate your ROI, start small if you’re hesitant, and don’t go it alone! Your future self and your business will thank you. By overcoming self-sufficiency and investing in the right resources, you can achieve greater success.
Seeking self-sufficiency might seem noble, but it can result in tough consequences for your business and life. Don’t let the desire to be completely self-sufficient lead to burnout and overwhelm.
